Jr. Team Tennis

Starting a Team

Starting a JTT team is easier than it sounds. You'll need to consider a couple things:

.

1. Finding a place to play: The season will be 7-8 weeks long and half your matches will be home matches. You'll of course need to find a place to play home matches. If you're not associated with a club, try getting courts at a local school or park. All you need for each home match are 2 courts for 2 hours.

>2. Finding players: If you're short a couple players, try some of the high school teams in the area for 18 and under teams, or maybe some middle schools for 14 and under teams. You may also want to try contacting a club in the area or even a park and rec.

3. Charging Team Fees: The League Fees pay for the online registration, your uniform shirt, and awards. However, there will be other costs associated with the team that you may have to charge players for. This usually just includes court fees and balls for home matches. Get a total cost and distribute the cost amongst your players. Or for balls, you can have each player contribute a can of balls at the beginning of the season. Any add-ons you want to add to your team will be an additional cost such as a team party, and match refreshments.

4. Practices: Many teams have practices once a week. If the matches are played on Saturday, usually a weeknight will work. If you don't feel comfortable running a practice, try hiring a tennis pro to run them. You can incorporate his rate into your team fee.

5. Managing the Team: Managing the team involves communicating with the opposing team manager/coach each week, and also communicating with your players for availability. As a team manager, you'll also need to deal with TennisLink for team registration and score entry. This is the part where you don't need tennis skills, just communication and organization skills.
