Jr. Team Tennis

USTA Jr. Team Tennis Spring League Rules

1. Matches will take place on Friday or Saturday late afternoons or evenings .

2. Coach/Captain’s are responsible for securing courts for all matches that take place at their home location. You need at least 2 courts to play a team match.

3. Home teams are responsible for providing balls for the match. Each match should require 2 cans of balls.

4. Each match consists of 2 doubles matches and 2 singles matches. The first hour of court time will be girls doubles and boys doubles. And the second hour will be girls singles and boys singles. They are on the court for the entire hour and are to play either a 8-game pro set or to whatever the score is at the end of the hour. If they finish a 8-game pro set before the hour, then can keep playing but those games will not count for the total score.

5. All matches will be No-Ad scoring to utilize time constraints.

6. A tiebreaker is to be played at 8-8. Use a 12-point tiebreaker which is first to 7 points

7. The team that wins the most games wins the match.

8. If the score is tied at the end, then the result is a tie.

9. Standings are based on games won. If there is a tie at the end of the season, the team with the best win-loss record, wins the league.

10. League winners win the right to advance to the Philadelphia District Championships in July. To play in these, each team must pay a team registration fee AND each player must have played in at least 3 team matches.

11. Home teams are responsible for reporting scores through TennisLink, although away teams also have this ability to do so if they choose.

12. Since we are indoors and costs are higher than outdoors, each team is responsible for paying a match fee of $90 that is payable to the host club. This is $180 total for 2 courts for 2 hours. NOTE to Host Clubs: This is a rate of $45/court-hour, which hopefully will be alright for this league. For 6 players to play, it would be $15/player.

a. Both teams NO MATTER WHAT must provide the $90 for each match. The only exception would be if you cancel the match 48 hours in advance and you can cancel the courts.

b. If a team shows up with a limited number of players so that they have to default courts, they still should have to pay the $90 team fee to play.

c. Away coaches/parents/representatives should get money from their team the week before and he or she should provide the money in ONE LUMP SUM to either the home parent/coach/representative or the Club Manager/Rep. This should happen before the match starts.

13. In the event of inclement weather, the home team coach/captain is responsible for making the decision on a match. Matches due to weather should be called no EARLIER than 3 hours beforehand. Matches should be made up by the end of the season.

14. Coach/Captains should communicate with their opposing coach/captain at least 48 hours before the match to coordinate details such as directions, number of players, etc.

15. In the case of defaults, since both teams are paying the $90, both teams should still get equal amount of court time.

16. Lateness, Bathroom Breaks, and Warmup time

a. If a player is late, his or her warmup time will be taken away. The match should still be played though. If a player isn’t there after 15 minutes, the late player will lose the toss and 3 games for every 15 minutes. If he or she doesn’t show up at all, it will be a full default.

b. Players should be limited to no more than 5 minutes on bathroom breaks

c. Warmup time should be no more than 5 minutes and should start on the hour. It is up to the home coaches and representative to tell players to stop warmup and start play.

17. Matches should be played at their scheduled time unless weather interferes, no matter how many players a team has. If a team doesn’t have enough players to play the match, the coach/captain can request from their opposing coach/captain to reschedule the match for another time. However, both coach/captains must agree. If the opposing captain says they cannot do this, then the match goes on as scheduled with the remaining players.

a. Example: John is Team A’s Coach, and Joe is Team B’s coach. John only has 1 boy and 2 girls to play against Team B, who has 3 boys and 3 girls to play, so he requests to reschedule the match. Joe’s players are not available at any other time, and cannot due so. Therefore, Team A plays Team B with 1 boys and 2 girls, defaulting 2 courts (Boys Doubles, and 2nd Mixed Doubles).

18. Each coach/captain should bring a scorecard for the match.

19. Every player should be registered on TennisLink in order to play. If a player is not registered on TennisLink, the player’s coach has 1 week to register the player. If a week has passed and the player has still not registered, the opposing coach should put the score for the player as a defaulted loss.

20. Coaching can be done at every changeover by assigned coaches only. This includes tiebreaker changeovers and should take no longer than 60 seconds.

21. Players with a 2011 Final USTA Section Ranking in the top 40 of the 12 and under Divisions and top 80 of the 14, 16, and 18 and under divisions may not play in the 12 and under, 14 and under or 18 and under (Coed) divisions. Since these rankings aren’t final yet, please consult the current standings list as a player may play but not be eligible for Districts. To see if a player is eligible or not, please consult your division coordinator. All coaches are responsible for looking into this for their players. If an ineligible player has played intermediate by accident, then all those individual matches will be defaulted.

22. Players can be disqualified in the middle of the season based on ranking OR Level of play. If a player is clearly an advanced player playing in the intermediate division (regardless of ranking), players may be disqualified and this will be discussed and decided by division coordinators and league commissioner.

23. Players can play on two different teams in different divisions and/or flights, but a maximum of 5 players may be shared between teams. For example if Club A has a 14 and under Intermediate and a 12 and under Intermediate, then no more than 5 players may be shared between these teams

24. Coaches are in charge of their team and their team number. Players can always be moved from team to team. However, if a player registers and then it turns out that the player is not able to play after the fact, refunds from the league and organization will NOT be granted.

25. The age eligibility cutoff date is August 31st, 2012. If a player turns the next age up before that date, he or she will have to play in the next division up. For instance if someone turns 15 before August 31st, 2012, he or she cannot play 14u, but is eligible for 18u.

26. All other guidelines will be put forth in the 2012 USTA Jr. Team Tennis Regulations. Each team should get a regulations book. If there are any other issues, do not hesitate to contact your Division Coordinator. He or she and the Area League Coordinator will be the final decision maker on all other issues.
